2012 SOUTHWIND REUNION OCTOBER 11 - OCTOBER 14, 2012 NEW LONDON, CT
|
New London - A city of approximately 25,000 is located on the coast of Long Island Sound
about half way between New York and Boston. It is the home of the United States Coast Guard
Academy, Connecticut College, and Mitchell College. The southeast branch of the University of
Connecticut is now located at Avery Point in Groton, once the location of the United States Coast
Guard's (USCG) primary training center. In addition to the USCG's operating station and vessels,
the Barque Eagle, International Ice Patrol and the USCG Research & Development Center are in
New London. It is also the Submarine Capital of the world with the United States Navy's Submarine
Base and General Dynamics' submarine construction and repair yard across the Thames River.
Although the major retailers have moved to surrounding malls, downtown New London is host to
many curio and antique shops, boutiques, bars, art studios, and museums.
The Hotel - The New London Plaza (formerly the New London Radisson Hotel) is located at 35
Governor Winthrop Boulevard in downtown New London. Although the rooms and facilities are
spacious and luxurious, the hotel will be remodeled by the new owners before our arrival in October
2012. The hotel is located adjacent to Interstate 95 and is less than a half mile from the Amtrak
Train and Greyhound Bus terminals as well as the Block Island and Long Island Ferries. It is
approximately one mile from the United States Coast Guard Academy and two miles from Fort
Trumbull, the location of the USCG Station, USCGC Eagle and other USCG facilities. The hotel is
charging the reunion $109 per night per room plus tax. This cost will include a hot breakfast on
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Reservations - Reservations are to be made directly with the hotel at 860-443-7000. Be sure
to tell them that you are with the CGC Southwind Reunion to receive our low rate. We have
reserved 55 rooms and reservations are now being accepted and must be made no later than 30
days before the reunion. Rooms must be guaranteed with a first night deposit or a major credit card.
